A new advertising campaign – Equal Love - has been launched to push for same-sex marriage rights in Australia.

The campaign, consisting of five ads which can be seen on YouTube and on www.equallove.info, will culminate in a National Day of Action on August 1 which will see couples taking part in mass “illegal weddings” all over the nation.

The ads are based on the PC versus Mac commercials. They depict professional actors playing the characters ‘equality’ versus the ‘Australian Government’.

Pastor Karl Hand from Crave MCC will be officiating over the Sydney “illegal wedding” ceremony.

“The so called progressive governments in America and Australia have been really slow in recognising the equality of queer people, and have stalled on so many of the promises that they have made,” Hand said. “It’s time for queer people to stand up and take their future into their own hands.”

Hand said he hoped the ceremony would make it clear to the federal government that “human rights are not optional” and people were no longer willing for equal marriage rights to be delayed.

Participants on the day will be presented with an official “illegal” Australian Marriage certificate and are invited to write their own vows if they choose.
