South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has once again called for gay and lesbian marriage to be made legal.

Hanson-Young was addressing the ‘Equal Rights Now’ rally in Melbourne, organised by the National Union of Students, on Saturday November 22. She told the crowd, “True equality for same-sex couples includes having the right to marry.”

The rally included the presentation of a 30,000-signature petition to be tabled in parliament in favour of rights for same-sex couples relating to marriage, IVF and adoption.

Two weeks ago, the Greens moved an amendment to the same-sex omnibus bill currently before the Senate, which would have made the Marriage Act gender neutral.

Only the five Greens senators supported the amendment.

Hanson-Young wants gay marriage to become a major topic of discussion.

“When we look at the debate and discussion among the Australian public, it is evident that it is an issue that people are prepared to continue to talk about, and are looking to their parliamentarians for some leadership on,” she told the rally.

“Several polls over the last couple of years indicate enormous support from the Australian people to allow gay marriage. It’s time for the parliament’s actions to reflect that sentiment.”

Debate in the Senate on the same-sex omnibus bill is expected to resume today.
